An independent software publisher.

Command Publishing Limited is a private limited company registered in England and Wales. We develop, publish and operate web-based software, and take on development work for clients in the same technical areas.

The company grew out of long-running work on font tooling, publishing utilities and browser applications, and was incorporated to put that work on a formal footing. We write our own software rather than reselling anybody else's, and we run it on infrastructure we control.

How we work

Four things shape most of the decisions we make about a project.

Small team, whole stack

The same people design the interface, write the server code, look after the database and administer the hosting. There is no handover and no queue between a problem being reported and somebody who can fix it.

Built to last, not to demo

We prefer plain, well-understood technology with a long support life over whatever is fashionable this year. Applications we wrote years ago are still running, still maintained and still being extended.

We host what we build

Windows and Linux, IIS and Apache, SQL Server and MySQL. Running the servers ourselves makes backups, patching and uptime our responsibility rather than a third party's.

Careful with people's data

We collect only what an application needs to work, hold user-submitted material behind human review before publication, and give people a direct route to ask what we hold and have it removed.

What we work in

The stack varies with the job. These are the areas we know well enough to support in production.

  • PHP and MySQL on Linux, typically with cPanel-managed hosting
  • Classic ASP and VBScript on IIS, with SQL Server
  • JavaScript in the browser, including offline-capable and installable applications
  • Font tooling, file-format conversion and document generation
  • Server administration, migration and backup for all of the above
